Common use

Clobetasol is a high-potency topical corticosteroid used to treat various inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and allergic skin reactions. It works by reducing inflammation, redness, itching, and swelling in affected areas. This medication is typically used when lower-strength steroids are ineffective. It is meant for short-term use due to its strength and potential side effects.

Dosage and direction

Apply a thin layer of clobetasol to the affected area once or twice daily, exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use on the face, groin, or underarms unless specifically directed. Wash hands before and after applying the cream or ointment, and avoid covering the area with airtight bandages unless told to do so. Use only for the duration prescribed—usually no more than 2 consecutive weeks.

Precautions

Avoid prolonged use or applying to large areas of skin, as systemic absorption may occur. Do not use on broken skin, infected lesions, or near the eyes. Tell your doctor if you have a history of skin thinning, immune suppression, or hormonal disorders. In children, use should be limited, as they are more susceptible to side effects.

Contraindications

Clobetasol is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to corticosteroids or any of the product ingredients. Do not use it to treat rosacea, acne, fungal, viral, or bacterial skin infections. It should not be used in the eyes or on mucous membranes. Long-term or inappropriate use can cause skin damage or adrenal suppression.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include burning, itching, dryness, redness, or skin thinning at the application site. With extended use, it may cause stretch marks, discoloration, or acne-like eruptions. Rare but serious side effects include adrenal suppression, especially in children or with high-dose/long-term use. Report any signs of skin infection or worsening condition to your healthcare provider.

Drug interaction

While topical clobetasol has minimal systemic interaction, it may interact with other topical medications applied to the same area. Avoid using with other corticosteroids unless directed. Tell your doctor about all skin products, especially those containing retinoids, salicylic acid, or antifungals. Do not combine with occlusive dressings unless instructed.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one—do not apply extra to make up for it. Continue with your regular schedule. Frequent missed doses can reduce treatment effectiveness.

Overdose

Using too much clobetasol or applying it too frequently can cause systemic corticosteroid effects, including hormonal imbalance, weight gain, fatigue, and high blood pressure. In children, overdose may lead to growth suppression or Cushing’s syndrome. Seek medical attention if symptoms of overdose appear. Always follow dosing instructions closely to avoid complications.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15°C–30°C / 59°F–86°F) in a dry place, away from heat and direct light. Keep the tube or container tightly closed when not in use. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children and do not share with others, even if they have similar symptoms.
